The case for fixed braces
Fixed braces — metal, or the less visible ceramic — are the workhorses of orthodontics. They handle complex movements aligners struggle with: large rotations, significant bite corrections, vertical movements. They also require zero discipline: they're on your teeth 24/7 whether you remember them or not.
The trade-offs are visibility, some food restrictions, and slightly more effort keeping them clean.
The case for clear aligners
Aligners are transparent, removable trays swapped every couple of weeks. They're nearly invisible — a real consideration for working adults — and because you remove them to eat and brush, there are no food restrictions and hygiene is easier.
The catch is the word 'removable': aligners only work if they're on your teeth 20–22 hours a day. Take them out for every coffee and long lunch, and your 18-month treatment quietly becomes a 30-month one. And not every case is suitable — complex movements may still need brackets.
Time, age and cost
Both options typically take around 18–24 months, depending on how much movement your teeth need. Age matters far less than people think — adults straighten their teeth successfully all the time; what matters is healthy teeth and gums.
